Top BA Interview Questions by Domain

A Business Analyst focuses on understanding business needs and translating them into solution requirements, bridging the gap between business stakeholders and the technical team. A Project Manager focuses on delivery — timelines, budgets, and risk management. BAs define what to build; PMs ensure it gets built on time and within scope.
💡 Pro Tip: In Agile, these roles often overlap. Mention this awareness — it shows maturity. Give a real example of collaborating closely with a PM.
Functional Requirements describe what the system must do — specific features and behaviors (e.g., "Users must be able to reset passwords via email"). Non-Functional Requirements describe quality attributes — performance, security, scalability (e.g., "The system must handle 10,000 concurrent users with response time under 2 seconds"). NFRs are often overlooked early and become costly production problems.
💡 Pro Tip: Always give a concrete real-world pair of examples. Mention that NFRs are often captured in a Supplementary Specification document and are tested during performance/load testing phases.
User Stories follow: "As a [user], I want [goal] so that [benefit]." INVEST ensures quality:

Independent · Negotiable · Valuable · Estimable · Small · Testable

Each story must have Acceptance Criteria — ideally in Given-When-Then (Gherkin) format so the dev team knows exactly when the story is "done."
💡 Pro Tip: Interviewers love when you attach a live example — e.g., "As a bank customer, I want to view my last 10 transactions so I can track recent spending." Then walk through the ACs.
KYC (Know Your Customer) is a regulatory compliance process to verify client identity. As a BA your work includes: mapping current-state workflows, identifying gaps against RBI/FATF regulations, and documenting requirements for digital onboarding — covering document verification, biometric checks, CIBIL pulls, and AML screening. Deliverables: BRD, Process Flow Diagrams, Use Cases, and Traceability Matrix.
💡 Pro Tip: Name real regulatory bodies (RBI, SEBI, FATF) and acronyms (AML, CDD, EDD) to demonstrate genuine domain depth. Mention specific systems like Finacle, Temenos, or Oracle FLEXCUBE if relevant.
First understand each stakeholder's underlying business need, not just their stated requirement — conflicts are often about means, not ends. Use MoSCoW prioritization, stakeholder impact matrices, and facilitated workshops to align. Always escalate to leadership with data: ROI, risk impact, or compliance implications. Never pick sides — remain the neutral facilitator.
💡 Pro Tip: Use the STAR method. Describe a real conflict (e.g., Sales wants a fast feature rollout, Compliance says more controls are needed) and walk through how you facilitated a decision workshop to reach consensus.
I maintain the Product Backlog — Epics broken into Stories with acceptance criteria and sub-tasks. In Sprint Planning I refine and prioritize stories with the team. During the sprint I track progress on the board, manage defects with priority/severity labels, and update the burndown chart. Confluence is linked for BRDs, process flows, and meeting notes. I use JIRA Dashboards to give stakeholders a live view of sprint health.
💡 Pro Tip: Mention specific JIRA features: custom fields for BA metadata, story point estimation in Planning Poker, bi-directional traceability (Story → Epic → BRD), and JQL queries for custom filters and reports.
BAs typically use: SELECT / WHERE / GROUP BY / HAVING for data analysis, JOINs (INNER, LEFT, RIGHT) to combine tables, aggregate functions (COUNT, SUM, AVG), and subqueries for complex filters. Primary use case: UAT data validation — querying data to confirm the system behaves as per requirements before sign-off.
💡 Pro Tip: Clarify you're not a DBA — your SQL is for data validation and root-cause analysis. Show 2–3 practical scenarios: checking record counts, validating lookup table values, identifying missing data in a migration.
BRD — Business Requirements Document. High-level business needs, goals, and scope. Audience: business stakeholders.

FRD — Functional Requirements Document. Detailed system behavior derived from the BRD. Audience: technical / development teams.

SRS — Software Requirements Specification (IEEE standard). Covers both functional and non-functional requirements in structured detail.
💡 Pro Tip: Terminology varies by organization. Always ask "What documentation standard does your team follow?" — it shows you're adaptable and pragmatic.
